The appetizer for Saturday’s “Greatest day on the Punt” will be served up Friday evening at Sydney’s Wentworth Park with the running of the Ladbrokes Million Dollar Chase (MDC) final (Race 8).
The connections of the winning greyhound will walk away with a million dollars after around 29.50 seconds of hard out chasing action over 520m.
After months of qualifying races, raced at various venues throughout New South Wales, eight semifinal races held last week, decided the final field of eight outstanding greyhounds who will match their paws in their chase for riches in the sixth running of the Ladbrokes sponsored world’s richest greyhound race.
Former Trackside presenter Elizabeth (Liz) Whelan will host a special uninterrupted four-hour long live stream on the MDC meeting.
Liz kindly provides us with her expert analyst on the MDC final.
“The Million Dollar Chase is my favourite race meeting – it’s such a cool meeting. Friday is the culmination of months of qualifying action held throughout the state.
“Regional qualifying races at venues like Broken Hill provides everyone with the opportunity to take part in what is a life changing event.
“Two greyhounds dominate discussions around the likely race outcome.
“Enza Sparkles ($2.50 & $1.28 – NZ TAB Fixed) became the quickest ever female 520m greyhound around Wentworth Park when she sizzled to her 29.17 semifinal win. She has drawn (trap-two) from where she can use her blistering early pace to her advantage.
“She had been trialing really well prior to her semi, and I believe Enza Sparkles is the one to beat.
“The trap-five draw that Power And Glory ($2.50 & $1.28) will race from probably isn’t that bad as those drawn either side of him aren’t expected to hinder him.
“Power And Glory won the Golden Easter Egg (Gr. 1 520m), and he is peaking nicely for this final with this being his fourth run back in. He is capable of running a 29.20 time which is insane times.”
Liz Whelan suggests that possible combo cases can be built for the trap-one drawn Foreign Capital ($18 & $3) and My Boy Bingo (9.50 & $2.20) who will race from the three-trap.
“Foreign Capital hadn’t race like that before (29.90 semi win). He has been racing from poor prior draws, and his improved draw here will help him.”
Foreign Capital is part owned by Gordon Sciberras, who raced the outstanding 85 race winner Little Mother ($377,751) from the Lisa Cole kennels around 15 years ago.
“My Boy Bingo has a slight New Zealand connection, with the former Kiwi Taylor Thornton having trained his mum Sweet Imitated,” advised Whelan.
Another feature on Friday’s Wentworth Park card is the running of the Gr. 2 Sydney Cup final over the 720m staying distance (Race 7).
Warm favourite Without A Trace ($1.75 & $1.14) is Liz Whelan’s best bet for the evening.
“Without A Trace was outstanding in the way she won her heat. She was making her track debut and for her to run 41.35 first up was super. She will be a big improver following that,” explained Whelan.
Kiwi’s can catch the live action on Trackside 1 (races 4-12) and Trackside 2 (races 1-3) on Friday evening.
