Waikato Stud stallion Super Seth’s stunning sophomore season keeps rolling on, including impressive wins at Caulfield on Saturday by blue-blooded fillies Mary Eliza and Madiyya.
Waikato Stud homebred Mary Eliza is a daughter of Bonneval, who earned New Zealand Horse of the Year titles in 2017 and 2018. The top-class daughter of Makfi was bought privately by Garry Chittick at the conclusion of a 14-start career that produced seven wins including the Gr. 1 New Zealand Oaks, Australian Oaks and Underwood Stakes.
A smart half-length victory over 1600 metres at Caulfield on Saturday was the second win of a five-start career for Mary Eliza, who has also placed twice.
“She's a filly that we've always had a good opinion of and she's so well bred,” said Katherine Coleman, who trains in partnership with long-time Waikato Stud associate Peter Moody.
“We've just had to be patient with her and give her a chance to mature, and she still doesn't quite look there yet. She's still a bit babyish and light, and whatever she does in this preparation, she's going to improve on. But it’s really pleasing to get this win for the team at Waikato Stud. We have toyed with the idea of taking her up to Queensland.”
Bonneval has a rising two-year-old colt by Noverre, named Jean Georges, who was withdrawn from the Karaka and Inglis Easter yearling sales and retained by Waikato Stud. Bonneval has a weanling filly by Super Seth and is in foal to him again.
On the same Caulfield card on Saturday, Trelawney Stud’s Madiyya won convincingly over 1400 metres to improve her career record to two wins and a second from only three starts.
Madiyya is a half-sister to the dual Group One winner and sire Grunt and multiple stakes winner Zayydani. Their dam, the Van Nistelrooy mare Ruqqaya, is a half-sister to the five-time Group One winner and quality sire Ocean Park.
Mary Eliza and Madiyya are just the latest in a long line of exciting prospects for Super Seth, whose spectacular start at Waikato Stud has prompted a service fee increase to $75,000 for 2025.
Himself the winner of five races including the Gr. 1 Caulfield Guineas, Super Seth is the sire of 38 winners from only 76 runners so far. His two crops of racing age have already produced six individual stakes winners, headed by Group One winners Feroce, Linebacker and La Dorada.
Super Seth was last season’s champion New Zealand first-season sire and is guaranteed the second-season title this term. He sits in 12th place on the overall sires’ premiership, with 13 winners from 26 starters and progeny earnings of $1.79 million.
Super Seth is in 69th spot across the Tasman, where his 46 runners have produced 24 winners and more than A$3.8 million.
