Pencarrow Stud’s standout season produced another highlight last week with two mares breaking the $100,000 mark during the National Online Breeding Stock Sale on Gavelhouse Plus.
Sir Peter Vela’s operation recently celebrated 100 wins this season by stud graduates, headed by Group One triumphs by Feroce in the Australian Guineas and Maison Louis in the Queensland Derby. Homebreds Tomodachi and Island Life have scored Group Three wins in the Vela colours, while the Pencarrow-bred Golden Century placed in the Gr. 1 New Zealand Derby.
That successful run continued in the Online Breeding Stock Sale, where Pencarrow’s four mares fetched a total of $288,500 and an average price of $72,125.
Two-race winner and Gr. 3 Anniversary Handicap placegetter Asama Blue, who was offered in foal to exciting Windsor Park Stud shuttle stallion Paddington, topped the sale at $126,000 and was bought by the Sunlight Trust. Golden Century’s dam Breeze was the other mare in the catalogue to crack six figures, selling for $102,500.
“They’re a couple of very nice mares and we were delighted to see them both sell the way they did,” Pencarrow Stud manager Leon Casey said.
“We knew they had good credentials and expected a fair bit of interest in them, but it’s always hard to judge a market in the lead-up to a sale like this. What we ended up getting for them was probably towards the upper end of what we would have expected, so we’re very pleased and wish the new owners well.
“It’s been a rewarding few months for all of us at the Pencarrow team, things have been rolling along pretty nicely. With a very busy foaling season just around the corner, it’s good to be going into the spring with a bit of momentum and positivity.”
Another of the drawcards of last week’s sale was the recently retired Gr. 3 Rotorua Stakes winner and Karaka Millions 3YO placegetter Karman Line. She was offered by Wexford Stables and is now bound for Japan following her $95,000 purchase by Golden Orchid Brothers Inc.
“We decided to purchase Karman Line because we were impressed by the softness and flexibility in her back movement, which we believe makes her well-suited for Japanese racing,” Golden Orchid’s Junichiro Obara said.
“Going forward, we are planning matings that would allow her offspring to perform well in short-distance turf or dirt races.”
The 2025 National Online Breeding Stock Sale achieved an aggregate of $874,600 from 41 mares sold, with an average price of $21,331.
