Time has been called on the brief, but hugely successful racing career of last season’s champion juvenile Velocious.
The well-bred daughter of Written Tycoon will be a feature lot when offered at the Inglis Digital July (Late) Online Sale, which will run from July 25-30.
Velocious added significant performance to her pedigree during an outstanding two-year-old season that saw her triumph in the Gr.1 Sistema Stakes (1200m), the Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m) and the Listed Challenge Stakes (1100m).
Trained by Stephen Marsh for Albert Bosma’s Go Racing syndication company, she also beat older opposition in a pair of open handicaps this term at Te Aroha and Te Rapa.
Velocious subsequently crossed the Tasman, but was unplaced in the Listed Queensland Day Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm and the decision was made to retire the filly, who won $980,550 from 13 starts.
“She had a wind operation last year and came back to win a couple more races really well,” Bosma said.
“We scoped her after that race in Brisbane and it’s loosening up again, that’s why she didn’t perform up to her best.
“She’s a Group One-winning two-year-old by Written Tycoon and there’s only been three of them, so it’s a great opportunity for someone to buy her ahead of the breeding season.
“She’s in Brisbane and will travel down to the Hunter Valley to Willow Park Stud on Sunday night.”
Bosma described Velocious’ two-year-old performances as exceptional.
“She was so dominant, she had superior speed and class and that’s a powerful combination, that’s what makes an exceptional young horse,’’ he said.
“One of the most remarkable things was her win in the Sistema.
“Not many people knew, but she got caught in traffic that day and was in the truck for about five hours and got off with 30 or 40 minutes to go before the race.
“She was saddled straight away and into the parade ring and then won the race. That was a hell of a performance when you realised what she had been through.”
Velocious was bred by Inglewood Stud and purchased out of their draft at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale for $190,000 and Bosma also secured her Dundeel filly the following year for $300,000.
“There’s plenty to come from the family and we’ve got her half-sister Alacritous, who we think is very, very good,” he said.
They are out of the Snitzel mare Parmalove who is a half-sister to the Listed Alinghi Stakes (1100m) winner Liesele and Inglis Guineas (1400m) winner Loved Up.
“We’re hugely grateful to Albert and the Go Racing team to be afforded this opportunity to offer Velocious on their behalf,’’ Inglis Bloodstock Sales Manager and New Zealand representative Brett Gilding said.
“I was at Ellerslie when she won the Karaka Million and fell in love with her when I saw her in the paddock before the race, she is a beauty and I think people will love her when they see her.
“People want to breed and racehorses like her and I think major breeders are going to be excited by the opportunity to breed from a horse like her.''
