The Government has announced greyhound racing will be phased out gradually over the next 20 months.
Racing Minister Winston Peters made the announcement today, after three previous reviews, to close the sport down.
The extended timeline - which would see racing conclude in July 2026 - is to allow time to re-home the estimated 2900 racing dogs in the industry.
“This is not a decision that is taken lightly but is ultimately driven by protecting the welfare of racing dogs," Peters said.
An Entain Australia and New Zealand spokesperson said the company was committed to work with all of the parties involved.
"As the operators of the TAB and betcha brands, we are in regular conversations with our strategic partner TAB New Zealand about all aspects of our wagering operation in New Zealand," they said.
"Following this decision, we will now work with TAB NZ and Greyhound Racing New Zealand around the priorities for greyhound racing and what role Entain is required to play."
Peters also announced the appointment of an advisory committee that will be in place to manage the close down.
“A key task will be the rehoming of the estimated 2,900 racing greyhounds in New Zealand," he said.
“The Committee members are Heather Simpson (Chair), Murray Johnson and Lindsay Burton. They will provide advice on ensuring animal welfare, and support for those involved in the industry.
“Keeping unwanted dogs safe is a priority. The Government is working with animal welfare organisations to establish programmes to support rehoming."
