Feature heat racing highlights today’s racing action at both the Addington and Cambridge Raceways.
Open class heats will be contested to finalize fields for next Thursday’s feature finals at both venues.
At Addington two heats will be held for the 525m Springston Hotel Stakes, which carries a final stake of $20,000.
In the first heat (M9 Race 8) the Craig Roberts prepared Paw Earnest ($1.90 & $1.08 – TAB Fixed) returns seeking to back up his last start $20,000 feature pace-making 30.03 525m win. Kennelmate Sinead Bale ($6 & $1.50) is capable of snaring a placing.
The inform Matt Roberts and Jack Johnson training partnership will be looking to the talented, but at times enigma chaser Let Him Cook ($5.50 & $1.45) to advance.
Stuck Throttle ($3.60 & $1.24) is likely to enjoy his improved draw while wearing the TAB 3 rug for his conditioner Garry Cleeve. His class is undoubted after being the runner up in three Group 1 races last season.
The second heat (M9 Race 9) again sees Craig Roberts trained runners holding the key via the powerful finishing Paw Bradley ($2.50 & $1.16). His dual Group 1 winning kennelmate Xisco Bale ($5 & $1.45) is returning after having a recent issue.
Opawa Hass ($4.40 & $1.40) has quickly rushed through the grades, and a competitive open-class debut can be expected from this Dave Fahey and Katie Wyllie mentored chaser. Kennelmate Taieri Gout ($4.50 & $1.40) has the ability to feature.
Two sets of 295m feature sprint heats, one for the female and the other for the male greyhounds, will decide who will return for their $10,000 finals.
Opawa April ($1.40 & $1.03) just continues to deliver for the Fahey/Wyllie combination, and her early pace is likely to be a telling factor in the Active Electrical Christchurch Dash first heat (M9 Race 5).
Bubbles Tonight ($5 & $1.35) is a promising sharp sprinter from the Roberts/Johnson kennels who is making her open class debut in this dash.
Calum Weir is maintaining a tidy strike rate with his sprinters and Gotcha Pennies ($1.85 & $1.05) can be rewarded for her consistent recent sprints in the second heat (M9 Race 6).
Broadway Gem ($3.40 & $1.60) secures the draw advantage here via trap-two for her conditioner Jonathon McInerney. She is proven from the inner traps.
Weir also holds a strong hand in the third heat (M9 Race 7) with the open class debutante Gotcha Luck ($2.05 & $1.12) expected to handle her rise in class here.
Malcolm Grant has recently formed a training partnership with Mel Bryon, and they have quickly established their credentials, notably enjoying success with the Diamond prefixed chasers.
Diamond Grace ($3.20 & $1.24) certainly has the ability to book her place in the final from this heat.
The male sprinters contest a pair of 295m heats in The Homekill Guys Ltd Dash with last season’s outstanding sprinter Opawa Mocha ($2 & $1.10) provided with swooping claims from trap-eight for the Fahey/Wyllie combo in the first heat (M9 Race 10).
It’s a head scratcher in behind him with the vastly experienced sprinter Smokin Ivan ($5 & $1.50) holding sound advancement claims for Roberts & Johnson.
The second heat (M10 Race 1) sees another sharp Fahey/Wyllie trained sprinter Dingo Night ($1.45 & $1.02) holding a mortgage over the dash.
Craig Roberts will load away his proven sprinter Hadwin Bale ($4.60 & $1.25) into the eight-trap from where he has built an imposing record from.
At Cambridge this afternoon the three 375m Cannonball Sprint heats are likely to provide low-flying short course action as the speed merchants seek out final field placings for next week’s $10,000 final.
The sisters Lisa and Tracey Craik have made a flying start to the new season and they have Portland Ding Us ($2.60 & $1.60) currently humming along sweetly. He can add to his winning form line in the first heat (Race 5).
Big Time London ($3 & $1.20) is a proven Cambridge 375m sprinter for Lisa Cole and she owns the field best 20.96 winning 375m time.
Last season’s Gr. 1 Railway Sprint winner Everest Sky ($1.60 & $1.06) will be all the rage in the second heat (Race 4). He can swoop on his rivals from trap-eight and Dave Fahey and Katie Wyllie return him to Cambridge following his strong last start 22.34 Ascot Park 390m win.
Space Conspiracy ($5.50 & $1.50) has been a consistent Cole trained sprinter throughout her 65 race career and she’s a prospect of making it through to the final.
The current Waikato Greyhound of the Year, Lion’s Den ($1.75 & $1.06) takes his place in the third heat (Race 5) for the Craik sisters. He’s a demon sprinter at this venue as seen by his 20 375m wins and 20.86 PB clock.
Adding the intrigue factor to this field is the open class debut sprint for the promising Jared Udy and Denise Cottam prepared Simek, ($7.50 & $1.65) having won nine of his career 14 races.
The Corey Steele prepared Opawa Sooty ($4.60 & $1.30) bounces straight back into the open class sprinting ranks following his easy 21.41 C4 375m win last Thursday.
Insufficient nominations were received to hold heats for next week’s $20,000 Jack Hannon Memorial Cup over 457m at Cambridge.
However, a number of those contenders will take their place in this afternoon’s last race 457m May Hounds Greyhounds Rehoming Group Stakes.
It is an event that can be described as a Lisa Cole verses Dave Fahey and Katie Wyllie clash.
From the Cole kennels are the Group 1 winners Fear To Tread ($13 & $1.80) and More Magic ($2.80 & $1.07), along with the promising chaser All Over Rover ($12 & $1.70).
Fahey and Wyllie will be represented by the newly crowned 2024/25 NZ Bred greyhound of the Year, Jerry Cola ($1.50 & $1.02) who returns to the venue where he won last season’s NZ Derby. Opawa Kyle ($31 & $2.90) will also line up for them.
And adding to the combos’ puzzle in the field is the presence of the Glennis Farrell trained Bay Flyer ($17 & $2.05) who led throughout to win last Thursday’s 457m race.
