An already perfect trip could get even better if Tony Barron can land a winner at Ascot Park on Wednesday.
Barron is back in his home province with three runners on something of a surprise mission.
With suitable races in the south and the chance to catch up with family, there was plenty of motivation for the West Melton trainer to pack up his float and attempt to add to the more than 100 races he’s won at his former home track.
“Everything has worked out and the horses seem to have travelled down very well,” Barron said
“I’m very happy with them.”
Barron brings Munroe’s Mate south on the back of a creditable sixth on Show Day at Addington.
“His Cup Week run was good, he ran sixth and he wasn’t far away from them.”
“He really seems to be coming to it now.”
“He is a big kid and a trip like this will do him the world of good.”
“He went through a stage where he was galloping and we don’t know why, but we have the pacifiers on him now and he seems happy.”
“He’s got the draw and I think he will give them plenty to think about.”
Aspirational Dream also heads south for Barron on the back of a creditable run during New Zealand Cup Week.
The mare only went down by a short margin when running on into second at Ashburton.
Fourth up and into form, the four-year-old looks a bright winning hope.
“She seems really well as well, her run at Ashburton was great.”
“This time last year she was running third behind Keyang Zahara in the Trotting Oaks.”
“There have been a few frustrations along the way, just little things like tying up and things like that.”
“But she seems in a good space at the moment and it looks like a good race for her.”
Another Vinnie will start at long odds for Barron in Wednesday’s two-year-old event. (Race 8)
Though the pacer hasn’t shown it in his two starts to date, he has shown his trainer promise at home and is working towards better form.
Barron’s brother Clark starts a team of four at Ascot Park, including the favourite for the feature trot (Race 5) in Bring On The Muscle.
The four-year-old looked to peak on his run in his last-start third at Winton.
However, he has run a slick 3.03 time in a recent 2400m Wyndham workout, suggesting he will strip fitter this week.
Bring On The Muscle shares the 40m back mark with Julie Jaccka and Jimmy Carter.
Clark Barron also starts Majestic Challen, Herb, and last week’s winner Mr President on Wednesday.
